SEQUENCE

Sequence is a board game using cards, two dice and colored chips. The object of the game is to score two (2) Sequences before the opponent does when two players or two teams (four players) are playing; or one (1) Sequence when three players or three teams (six players) are playing.

A Sequence is a connected series of five spaces of the same colored chip either up-and-down, across, or diagonally, on the game board.

Note: There are printed "chips" in the four corners of the game board. These are free spaces and may be used by all players to complete their Sequence. More than one player may use the same corner as part of a Sequence.

GAME SET-UP:

Place the game board on a flat surface with enough room around the board for placement of the draw deck of cards, marker chips, and discards for each player.

Team players must be evenly divided into teams. Team members must alternate their physical positions with opponents around the playing surface.

Players cut the cards and the lowest card deals - Aces are high. The dealer shuffles the cards and deals the same number of cards to each player (see table below for proper number of cards to be dealt). All members of a team use the same color marker chips.

NUMBER OF CARDS DEALT TO EACH PLAYER:

For 2 players or 2 teams: Team players must be evenly divided into two teams. Team members must alternate their physical positions with opponents around the playing surface.

For 3 players or 3 teams: Team players must divide evenly into three teams. Team members must alternate their physical positions every third player around the playing surface.

Players cut cards and lowest card deals - Aces are high. The dealer should shuffle the cards and deal out the same number of cards to each player (see table below for proper number of cards to be dealt). Be sure all members of a team use the same color marker chips.

Number Of Cards Dealt Each Player

  • 2 players 7 cards each
  • 3 players 6 cards each
  • 4 players 6 cards each
  • 6 players 5 cards each
  • 8 players 4 cards each
  • 9 players 4 cards each
  • 10 players 3 cards each
  • 12 players 3 cards each

RULES OF THE GAME:

Beginning with the player to the left of the dealer and moving in a clockwise direction, each player in turn selects a card of their choice from their hand and places it face up on a discard pile (players should start their own discard pile in front of them, visible to all other players) and then places one of their marker chips on the matching card on the game board. Each card is pictured twice on the game board except for Jacks. The player then draws a card from the draw deck to replace the card played and his turn ends

THE JACKS:

There are eight (8) Jacks in the card deck, four (4) Jacks with two eyes which are wild and are used to place a chip anywhere on the board not already occupied by a chip, and four (4) Jacks with one (1) eye which are anti-wild and are used to remove chips from the board.

To use a Jack for a turn, place the Jack face up on the discard pile and place or remove a chip belonging to your opponent from the board according to whether it is a one-eyed or two-eyed Jack. That completes the turn. The player's own chip cannot be placed on that same space during the turn. A chip cannot be removed if it is already part of a completed Sequence. Once a Sequence is achieved by a player or a team, it cannot be broken. A player may play either one of the Jacks whenever they work best for his strategy, during his turn.

DEAD CARDS:

A card in a players hand which cannot be played on the board because there is no open matching space is a DEAD card. The Player may turn it in for a new card when it is his turn. Place the dead card on the discard pile, announce that it is being turned in as a dead card and take a replacement card (one card per turn). Proceed to take the normal turn. If a player still cannot play a card on that turn, he must pass and wait until the next turn.

LOSS OF A CARD:

Once a player has taken his turn and placed his chip on the game board, he must take a card from the draw deck. If a player fails to take a card before the next player makes a move AND takes his/her card, the player loses the right to take a card and must finish the game with less cards than the other players - a disadvantage.

TABLE TALK, RESHUFFLE:

There must be no table talk or coaching team members. If a teammate says or does anything to alert a fellow teammate to a preferred open space or to avert them from the play they are about to make, every member of that team must forfeit one card of their choice from their hand and place it on their discard pile.

When the draw deck becomes depleted during play, all discard piles are shuffled together to create a new draw deck.

END OF PLAY:

Play continues in a clockwise direction until one player or team scores the required number of Sequences, at which point that player or team wins the game. If two Sequences are required to win, any one of the spaces from the first Sequence may be used as part of the second Sequence.
